1st St Lawrence Scouts on parade in 1910

1st St Lawrence Scout Group was established in 1909 and is the oldest Scout group in the Thanet. The group was originally known as 1st Ramsgate – Sir Charles Warren’s Own Scouts. General Sir Charles Warren served his military career in The Royal Engineers and reached the rank of General. He served the majority of his career in South Africa and was also Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police between 1886 and 1888, during the era of Jack the Ripper and came into some criticism for not being able to catch the notorious killer! General Sir Charles Warren was also a distinguished academic who worked as an archaeologist in The Holy Land. General Sir Charles Warren was a close friend of Lord Robert Baden-Powell and helped him to set up the Scout Movement.
